Delos WELLness Part 3

This concludes our three weeks of blogs inspired by a look into the ingredients of the Delos WELLness concept.  The last piece, which is ever present in all we do and think about when we design for our clients is about mind shifting, that we will not end where we started, that we will bring you, our client to a new place, a new beginning, and to a sense of completion.

fruitandvegFOOD:  What nourishes us, what we eat, and how we get that food is at the core of sustainable living and WELLness. Purchasing organic foods that are fresh and produced locally with as little processing as possible is the ethical approach to take when shopping, but cost is sometimes a factor that we can’t overlook if on a budget.  We can’t raise our own cows in the city, and most buildings would not allow a henhouse as part of the roof top garden, so growing your own is not realistic if you live in an urban environment, however the kitchen that includes a green growing cabinet is a reality.  Not just your sprouts, but your mesclun salad greens can be produced and harvested daily from the urban cultivator.   Reducing the carbon foot print by growing your own is not the only ingredient in a health conscious and efficiently run kitchen.  How we store our food and the way we cook is in large part responsible for the nutritious value we can get out of our resources.  One of the best refrigeration systems is Liebherr, the German made appliance system that most other brands have to catch up to in terms of quality, sustainable production methods, and food preservation. By becoming a member of a farming coop, or a Community Supported Agriculture Group (CSA) you can invest in your own food source and receive your share of the current crop of vegetables, eggs, meat and dairy straight to your door step.  This is not only a convenience, but supports the local agro-economy.   The nationwide organization Local Harvest connects end-users to farmers.   In New York City, Just Food and Turtle Bay CSA are just two of many such investor/buying groups you can join.

  • Think not about what is wrong with your house, but of what works for you and go from there.  We often focus on the negative and it gets in the way of good solutions to simple problems.
  • De-clutter your home and your thinking will become clearer.  Sometimes the solution is as simple as purging and getting rid of stuff.
  • Live in your house with as few things as possible.  Clear your attic and basement.  If you really have a hard time parting with things, put them in a storage facility you have to pay extra for, then you might think twice.  If it is out of your way, then maybe one day you can say good riddance.
  • Don’t be afraid to make decisions and to act on them.  Sometimes it is an interim solution to a space problem like placing a shoe rack where you intend your mud room to be one day that is the first step to make it happen.  The act serves the purpose for now and reminds you of what you will do permanently the day you have the time and money to do it right.
  • With an open mind you will find amazing amounts of space and good ideas on how to make changes in your home and to make it your sanctuary.
  • Wellbeing is not just for the Gods, and your home can be your Delos.
  • Call us today to find out how.
